Summary

First World War memorial unveiled on 21 December 1919, with further names added after the Second World War.

Description

MATERIALS: Aberdeen granite.

DESCRIPTION: Kettleburgh war memorial comprises a red Aberdeen granite Latin cross rising from a tapered plinth set on a single-stepped base. It stands some 2m high.

The inscriptions on the memorial are in the form of lead lettering and cover the front face of the cross. The inscription reads: TO THE/ GLORY/ OF/ GOD/ AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF/ OUR DEAR ONES/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR/ KING/ AND/ COUNTRY/ IN THE/ GREAT/ WAR/ 1914/ 1919/ 1939/ 1945.

The names of the fallen are listed on the plinth below.

History

The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England, both as a result of the huge impact the loss of three quarters of a million British lives had on communities and the official policy of not repatriating the dead, which meant that the memorials provided the main focus of the grief felt at this great loss.

One such memorial was raised at Kettleburgh as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by the members of the local community who lost their lives in the First World War. The memorial was unveiled by the churchwardens on 21 December 1919 with the dedication ceremony conducted by the Rev D Davies. The memorial commemorates eleven local servicemen who died during the First World War.

Following the Second World War, a dedication was added to commemorate the three fallen of that conflict.

In 2012 the lettering was re-enamelled with the help of grant aid from War Memorials Trust.
