A war memorial cenotaph of interwar date.
A war memorial cenotaph of interwar date, extended and restored in 2014.
MATERIALS: of ashlar stone on a composite stone base with bronze plaques.
DESCRIPTION: the war memorial is a cenotaph on a square two-stepped base. The cenotaph has wide joints and to the front (south-east) face is a bronze plaque with a Classical entablature and which reads: 1914-1918/ IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF THE MEN OF MARLBOROUGH/ WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES FOR/ THEIR COUNTRY./ NAMES. To each side are smaller bronze wing panels that read: IN MEMORY OF/ THE/ MEN OF/ MARLBOROUGH/ WHO LAID DOWN/ THEIR LIVES FOR/ THEIR COUNTRY/ 1939-1945/ NAMES. The elements of 2014 date are not of special interest*.

The war memorial commemorates the men of Marlborough who died in the First and Second World Wars and is originally of interwar date. It is shown on the Ordnance Survey Map of 1943, although the names of the fallen in the Second World War were added later, and the memorial was significantly enlarged and remodelled in 2014.
The War Memorial in Marlborough, Wiltshire is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impacts of world events on this community, and the sacrifices it has made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Architectural interest: a well-crafted cenotaph in dressed stone;
