Summary

First World War memorial with further names added after the Second World War.

Description

MATERIALS: limestone.

DESCRIPTION: Ramsbury War Memorial consists of a plain Latin cross with tapering shaft rising from a tapered plinth and two-stepped base.

The inscription is incised and painted black on the front face of the plinth and reads REMEMBER/ THE MEN OF RAMSBURY/ WHO DIED IN THE/ GREAT WARS/ TRUE LOVE BY LIFE, TRUE LOVE BY DEATH, IS TRIED:/ LIVE THOU FOR ENGLAND, THESE FOR ENGLAND DIED. Two of the other faces of the plinth are incised with the names of the fallen from the First World War.

The fourth face of the plinth is inscribed: 1939-1945 and underneath are nine names of those who lost their lives in the Second World War.

History

The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England, both as a result of the huge impact the loss of three quarters of a million British lives had on communities and the official policy of not repatriating the dead, which meant that the memorials provided the main focus of the grief felt at this great loss.

One such memorial was raised at Ramsbury as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by the members of the local community who lost their lives in the First World War.

It commemorates 65 local servicemen who died during the First World War. Following the Second World War, a dedication was added to commemorate the nine fallen of that conflict.

In 2012 the memorial was conserved with the help of grant aid from War Memorials Trust.

Reasons for Listing

Ramsbury War Memorial is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Architectural interest: a simple yet dignified limestone memorial cross;
* Group value: with the Church of the Holy Cross (Grade I) and 27 High Street opposite (Grade II).
