First World War memorial, unveiled on 28 November 1919, with later additions for the Second World War.

Description

Trysull and Seisdon War Memorial comprises a stone, hooded Latin cross set upon a tapering shaft with carved decorative details, surmounting a square plinth with rounded shoulder. This stands on a four-stepped circular base.

On the front face of the plinth is a dedication in incised letters to those who lost their lives in the First World War, which reads IN HONOURED MEMORY/ OF THE MEN FROM/ TRYSULL AND SEISDON/ WHO FELL IN THE/ GREAT WAR./ 1914 – 1918/ A TABLET IN THIS CHURCH/ RECORDS THEIR NAMES.

On the south face of the plinth is a dedication to those who lost their lives in the Second World War, which reads ALSO THOSE WHO/ FELL IN THE WAR/ 1939 – 1945/ REST ETERNAL GRANT UNTO/ THEM O LORD AND LET LIGHT/ PERPETUAL SHINE UPON THEM/ MAY THEY REST IN PEACE.

History

The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England, both as a result of the huge impact the loss of three quarters of a million British lives had on communities and the official policy of not repatriating the dead, which meant that the memorials provided the main focus of the grief felt at this great loss.

One such memorial was raised at Trysull as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by the members of the local community who lost their lives in the First World War.

The war memorial was dedicated on 28 November 1919 by the Bishop of Stafford. Names of the fallen are recorded on a tablet within Trysull All Saints' Church.

Following the Second World War a dedicatory inscription to those who lost their lives in that conflict was added to the memorial.

Reasons for Listing

Trysull and Seisdon War Memorial, unveiled on 28 November 1919, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:

* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Architectural interest: an ornate and striking Latin cross enriched with carved decorative details;
* Group value: with the Church of All Saints (Grade II*).
