First World War and Second World War memorial.
First World War and Second World War memorial.
DESCRIPTION: Thrigby War Memorial is located in the churchyard of the Grade II*-listed Church of St Mary, to the west of the entrance porch and adjacent to the tower.
It is of rough-hewn grey granite and takes the form of a Latin cross rising from a tapering, four-sided plinth surmounting a single-step, square base.
The dedication and names are recorded on the smooth, south face of the plinth in leaded lettering, reading, IN/ HONOURED MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE TWO WORLD WARS/ (2 NAMES)/ THOU WAST THEIR ROCK,/ THEIR FORTRESS, AND THEIR MIGHT,/ THOU, LORD, THEIR CAPTAIN/ IN THE WELL FOUGHT FIGHT,/ THOU IN THE DARKNESS DREAR/ THEIR ONE TRUE LIGHT,/ ALLELUIA. Recorded under each name are details of the regiment, and the date and location of the serviceman's death.
The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. This was the result of both the huge impact on communities of the loss of three quarters of a million British lives, and also the official policy of not repatriating the dead which meant that the memorials provided the main focus of the grief felt at this great loss.
One such memorial was raised at Thrigby as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by two members of the local community, one who died in the First World War and the other in the Second World War. Like many Norfolk war memorials, the example in Thrigby is situated within the parish churchyard.
Thrigby War Memorial, which is situated in St Mary’s churchyard, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
Historic interest:
* as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20.
Architectural interest:
* a well-executed Latin cross memorial.
Group value:
* with the Grade II*-listed Church of St Mary.
