DESCRIPTION: Holme Eden War Memorial is located in the churchyard of St Paul’s Church, Holme Eden, Warwick Bridge, Cumbria. It is prominently situated in the north-west corner of the churchyard, near to the churchyard entrance and overlooking the River Eden. It comprises a c.2.5m Celtic style grey granite cross with interlace ornament to the head, on a bowed inscribed shaft and a rough-hewn base with a relief-carved wreath at the foot. The shaft bears the inscriptions in relief-carved lettering.

The inscription reads: 1914/ (NAMES)/ 1919/ ERECTED BY PARISHIONERS AND FRIENDS// 1939 1945/ (NAMES).

History

The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. This was the result of both the huge impact on communities of the loss of three quarters of a million British lives, and also the official policy of not repatriating the dead which meant that the memorials provided the main focus of the grief felt at this great loss. One such memorial was raised at Holme Eden as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by the members of the local community who lost their lives in the First World War.

Holme Eden War Memorial was situated within the churchyard. The memorial commemorates ten local servicemen who fell in the First World War and two men who fell in the Second World War. It was unveiled on 14 December 1919 by the Reverend T Featherstone (vicar of the parish).
