DESCRIPTION: the memorial stands at the centre of a crossroads, close to The Smithy (Grade II) and Yew Tree Cottage (Grade II).
The memorial comprises a plain stone Latin cross on a tapering octagonal shaft with a square plinth and three-stepped octagonal base.
The main inscription in incised lettering on the plinth reads: (south face) THIS CROSS WAS ERECTED BY THE/ PARISHIONERS TO THE GLORY OF GOD,/ AND IN MEMORY OF THOSE OF THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR,/ 1914–1919/ (west face) GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS,/ THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE/ FOR HIS FRIENDS/ (north face) (4 NAMES)/ (east face)THANKS BE TO GOD WHO/ GIVETH US THE VICTORY.
The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. This was the result of both the huge impact on communities of the loss of three quarters of a million British lives, and also the official policy of not repatriating the dead which meant that the memorials provided the main focus of the grief felt at this great loss.
One such memorial was raised at Moccas as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by four members of the local community who lost their lives in the First World War.
Moccas War Memorial, which stands at a crossroads at the junction of the B4532 and Woodbury Lane, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
