Mid 19th century. Range of single storey farm cottages comprised of 2 L-plan ranges linked by gateway to form Z-plan. Squared and snecked rubble; ashlar dressings. Eaves and base courses. Chamfered reveals and cills variety of doors and fanlights.
GATEWAY: 2 gatepiers and screen walls at centre of E-W range. Pyramidal-capped rusticated ashlar gatepiers, with chamfered angles, band course and cornice; modern gates. Gatepiers linked to ranges on either side by flat coped ashlar screen walls, each with doorway.
L-PLAN RANGE TO W:
S ELEVATION: 9 asymmetrical bays (2-1-4-2). Blocked segmental carriage-arch in bay to outer left; clock in gabled stone surround above eaves. Door
(No 4) in centre bay; remaining bays fenestrated.
E ELEVATION: 10-bay (4-3-3). Door (No 1) in 3rd bay to left of centre, door (No 2) in bay to right of centre, and door (No 3) in penultimate bay to right. Bipartite windows in remaining bays. Flat-roofed canted bipartite window to right of left return; bipartite window to left.
W ELEVATION: later flat-roofed harled addition adjoined.
L-PLAN RANGE TO E:
S ELEVATION: 4 bays (1-3) to right. Door (No 5) in bay to right of centre; remaining bays fenestrated.
E ELEVATION: 15-bay (1-3-1-1-3-3-3). Door (No 6) in 5th bay to left of centre, door (No 7) in centre bay, door (No 8) in 3rd bay to right of centre, and door (No 9) in penultimate bay from right. Bipartite windows in remianing bays. Blocked doorway between 2nd and 3rd bays from centre.
W ELEVATION: later flat-roofed harled addition adjoined. Variety of glazing patterns in sash and case windows, 4-pane, 8-pane and 12-pane. Skew to left of clock on W range. Coped ashlar and rendered stacks, largely ridge, gablehead to SW. Grey slates to piended roofs.
Steading situated to N, backing onto cottages. Variety of windows, doors and machinery doors to N and E elevations of steading.
These buildings are shown on the OS Map 1852-53. Thornybank Cottages and Steading were originally associated with Thornybank House (see separate listing).
