Earlier-later 18th century. L-plan pier with rounded point to E. Coursed sandstone blocks. Sandstone rubble shelter wall on top of pier end.
Capernaum Pier was built for the coal shipping trade and was part of the 1774 development of a waggonway from the N Dunfermline coalfields. Coal came from the N and W of Dunfermline to Limekilns and Brucehaven Harbour where it was shipped away or used for the limekilns and saltpans in Charlestown and Limekilns. The harbour was built by Dr Chalmers and subsequently purchased from his estate upon his financial failure, by the Earl of Elgin. Later the harbour became a ship building yard; in 1823, 200 carpenters were employed here and many clippers involved in trade with India were built here (N Fotheringham). By the 20th century the yard was used for repairs and is now used for pleasure craft and is the home of the Forth Cruising Club.
