Williamwath bridge

Uploader's Comments

A wooden bridge was originally constructed at Williamwath in 1850 to provide a link between Dalton and Lockerbie over the River Annan. By 1881 the bridge had become very delapidated and "was one of the worst in the county" Repairs would cost £100. At a meeting of the Road Trustees in July 1881, my Great Great Grandfather John Kerr proposed that rather than repair the old structure a new iron bridge should be built at a cost of £750 and this was approved. The new bridge was opened in 1882 at a cost of £900 The inscription on the bridge reads: WILLIAMWATH BRIDGE ERECTED WITH WOODEN SUPERSTRUCTURE 1850 ENGINEERS D. & T. STEVENSON IRON SUPERSTRUCTURE ERECTED 1882 ENGINEERS J. & A. LESLIE CONTRACTOR J.CAMERON ARROL
