Description

Large 2-storey farmhouse built 1836 in style of William Burn,
courtyard steading to rear (north), tall free-standing barn
beyond. Minor alterations 1860 and later.
Farmhouse: coursed stugged ashlar with crow-stepped gables
and wall-head dormers. and 2 parallel, lower asymmetrical rear
wings around cobbled court; south elevation: 3 bays; advanced
wide gable left with porch projecting from re-entrant angle;
margined wide doorway with moulded reveals; small window
above; ground floor bipartites in outer bays (inserted) and
in recessed lower bay at left (armorial panel incorporated in
west gable of latter). Small-paned sash windows. Wall-head,
end and axial stacks, mostly paired corniced flues. Roofed
with graded slates.
Steading: 3 single storey ranges (taller north range has
loft) in U-plan, detached range at south with courtyard
entrance either side. Stugged, squared and snecked rubble
with ashlar dressings. North range has 2 cartways, series of
loft openings to either long wall, iron forestair to east
gable; east range (? byre) has slit ventilators and roof
lights; courtyard is cobbled, central midden enclosed by low
walls, with kennels at west end. Barn with (masonry) piers at
each corner and buttress central on each long wall -
intermediate cast-iron columns; boarded below eaves in gable
heads.
Roofed mostly with graded slates.

Statement of Interest

House is almost identical to Holm farmhouse, Penpont, which

is known to be by Burn. See S.R.O. GD 224/508/1/3.
