Medieval Dunkeld grew up around the cathedral but after the battle and fire of 1689 the new town was planned to run parallel to the river with a Y pattern street plan. This was formed by the High Street, Cathedral Street and another now mainly blocked leading to the demolished Dunkeld House. The Cross was the heart of the new town.
