18th century, 2-storey house, with extension circa 1835, when linked to single storey schoolroom, built circa 1830. Abacking graveyard of Bolton Parish Church.
THE OLD SCHOOLHOUSE: gabled E-W wing with circa 1835, piend roofed jamb added to centre of S elevation, obscuring original doorway; doorway flanking jamb to left with small pane fanlight. 2-leaf doors and 1st floor window above; windows to each floor in outer right bay. Rear elevation abutted by higher ground of graveyard, and with 3 windows at ground floor, blank above. S jamb with windows to S and one to each return elevation. Lean-to addtions to E gable end.
12-pane glazing pattern in sash and case windows; end stacks. Red pantiles.
SCHOOL: circa 1830, currently serving as workshop, and linked to SW angle of The Old Schoolhouse. Rubble with ashlar dressings. W elevation with wide doorway off-centre to right; modern lintel. multi-pane windows to N and S gables, in sash and case form. Timber mullioned bipbartite window to E with diamond lead-pane glazing.
Former schoolmaster's room to N end.
Grey slates; ashlar coped skews and dressings to end stacks.
RETAINING WALLS: semi-circular coping to rubble retaining wall to S. Graveyard walls adjoined to N.
19th century boiler and teacher's desk retained. Winding timber stair in The Old Schoolhouse, by original doorway. Later school at S end of village, is listed separately.
