Description

Mid 19th century. Grand 2-storey farmhouse in Tudor style of Wemyss Estate. U-plan with small courtyard at rear. Squared and snecked red sandstone, ashlar dressings, hoodmoulds to major openings. Stone mullions to bipartites. Windows at 1st floor breaking eaves in gabled dormerhead with finials.

W ELEVATION: 3-bay; broad advanced gabled bay at right. Door in advanced gabled porch in re-entrant angle with blank plaque. Bipartite flanking at ground, 2 smaller bipartites at 1st floor. Bipartites at ground and 1st floor to advanced bay, with blank plaque to gablehead.

N ELEVATION: 3-bay, again with broad advanced bay to right; canted window at ground with piended roof, bipartite above. Single light windows at ground and 1st floor to centre and outer left.

S ELEVATION: 2-bay, bipartite to left at ground, single window to right. Single windows at 1st floor. Gate with stone overthrow to courtyard at rear, single storey gables service outbuilding to E. Sash and case windows, predominantly 8 and 12-pane glazing patterns. Grey slates, saw-tooth skews with gablet skewputts. Rendered, coped end and ridge stacks. Lodge to N listed separately.

Statement of Interest

Mapwork indicates a later date than suggested by McWilliam (1835). Steading, and farm cottages sited to W.
