Description

Circa 1860. Possibly A and W Reid of Elgin. Single storey, rectangular plan mausoleum, orientated E-W with small tower adjoining SE corner. Sited on raised terrace above River Deveron. Squared and snecked rubble, polished ashlar dressings; base course, eaves course, stepped, coped buttresses, hoodmoulds to major openings.

E ELEVATION: steps to pointed-arch doorway with boarded door, moulded surround with nook-shafts. Trefoil window to gablehead. Buttress to right, 3-stage octagonal ashlar tower to left; 1st stage with gabled Gothic panels, surmounted by set-off 2nd stage and blind arcaded 3rd stage with colonettes and cornice, polygonal ashlar roof with finial and weathervane.

W ELEVATION: 3-light Gothic window, louvred diamond opening to gablehead above.

N AND S ELEVATIONS: 5 blind bays divided by buttresses. Tower to S.

Ashlar slabs to steeply pitched roof, ashlar coped skews with gablet skewputts, cross finials to gables. Ventilator to centre ridge.

MEMORIAL: to E, below terrace, to Fredrick de le Mare Murison 1842-1911. Cruciform, ashlar, raised on 2 steps.

RETAINING WALLS: low ashlar coped walls with cast-iron railings enclosing terrace to E.
