Description

Dated 1893. Single storey and cellar cottage, built as
post office, on falling ground. Squared, rake-jointed red
stugged sandstone with droved chamfered margins; raised
eaves course and moulded timber cornice.
S ELEVATION: apsed W gable curving round to doorway at
left; panelled door with fanlight and large finialled, gabled
porch above on decorative timber brackets with king post.
Window flanking to right and sundial panel under eaves to
outer right above slate panel inscribed with a poem.
Recessed panel on curved wall to left of door divided in
2 horizontally; J and R Ritchie and Son clock inserted in
upper part, probably a noticeboard formerly placed below.
Bipartite on W blow with date carved in eaves course and in
flanking panel to right.
N ELEVATION: advanced wing with cellar on falling ground
to right, with window on W return. Full height stone porch
set in re-entrant angle with forestair to door on E return
and window to N above boarded cellar door to right.
4-pane glazing pattern to sash and case windows. Cluster
of polygonal stacks at centre of main ridge with corner
stack on N wing. Piended and apsed roofs with green slates;
Terracotta ridge tiles and finials.
RAILINGS: simple cast-iron railings to basement area at W.

Statement of Interest

Almost certainly arose through Hunter patronage, employing

same red sandstone in which Thurston House had just been

remodelled. Slated panel below sundial bears poem by Rev

E S Bartlett, who may have gifted it to the post office,

it follws the form of slated, inscribed panel seen on

Thurston Jubilee Trough, listed separately.
