Alexander Ross, Inverness, 1886. Rectangular church orientated
east/west with Italian Romanesque west gable facade. Tooled
coursed rubble frontage, random rubble flanks, contrasting
polished ashlar dressings and long and short detailing.
Slightly advanced centre bay to west gable with large wheel
window lighting gallery set in round-headed recess with short
nook shafts and stiff-leaf capitals; band-course below
continues to right window at impost level. Below centre window
low arcaded tripartite with stumpy engaged columns with
scalloped capitals. Square tower at left, rising single stage
above balustraded, pilastered, round-headed arches in each
face; deep eaves, pyramidal slate roof and terminal apex
cast-iron weathervane. Round-headed entrance in channelled
ashlar base with Free Church insignia carved in tympanum;
double leaf plank door with ornate cast-iron hinges; pair
louvred slit lancets above; battered base-course.
Simple 6-bay flanks with round-headed windows; wheel window
in centre of east gable; ball finial at west apex, coped
stack at cast; slate roof.
Modern harled addition to rear.
Interior; original fittings; panelled gallery at west; braced
timber roof supported by cast-iron columns; raised Minister's
desk at east end with curved detailing to stairs and
balustraded front Gate piers; pair square ashlar gate piers
flank entrance with pyramidal caps; linked to similar end piers
by low coped coursed rubble retaining wall with cast-iron
spearhead railings matching double gates.
Ecclesiastical building in use as such.
Former Free Church of Scotland. Tower not completed at time of
opening.
