The letters WE are woven into the wrought iron gates standing for William Elliot. He inherited the Estate in 1728 from his father who made his fortune from dealing in gold lace hence his name ’The Laceman’. William was an army officer (Lt Col) and MP. He married in 1737 - very much against his fathers wishes (Henry de Nassau, Lord d'Auverquerque, PC) - the eldest daughter of the 1st Earl of Grantham Lady Frances de Nassau d’Auverquerque and lived in London and time to time at Wells House.
