Description

Dated 1807. Square tooled grey granite ashlar mausoleum with
vault; polished sandstone ashlar wallhead cornice, plinth and
obelisk. Each face of mausoleum with shallow advanced centre
portion framing blind depressed arch with square-headed blind
doorway within.
Rusticated quoins, deep eaves band, moulded eaves cornice
below crenellated wallhead. Centre square plinth on roof with
inscribed (Latin) panel in W face and moulded cornice,
formerly supporting short obelisk with draped urn in relief.
Entrance to vault in W containing marble sarcophagus.

Statement of Interest

Erected to memory of General James Grant, governor of Florida

and Stirling Castle, (b.1720), died at Ballindalloch 10 April

1806. Site of mausoleum said to have been chosen by General

Grant himself, being his favourite 'viewpoint'. On his death Ballindalloch passed to George MacPherson of Invereshie

(great nephew).

Obelisk fallen from plinth and lying beside mausoleum (1987).
