Description

Built mainly in second half of 18th century, part possibly by

William Craik of Arbigland, circa 1770, but some work perhaps

earlier; S block 19th century. Large stables court and mains, rectangular-plan ranges with lofts (below eaves), 3 ranges

about court, latter bounded at N by low quadrants with square

rusticated piers. Rubble-built with ashlar dressings; slate

roofs. W range a barn with timber-lintelled wide doorway,

slit ventilators; rear (W) lean-to with large sculptured

crest in S wall. S and E ranges both have square loft

openings and are linked by shelter at common angle; S range 6

bays with forestair cantilevered from one of 3 partially

blocked segmental-arched cartsheds. S-facing cartshed at SE,

with re-set yellow cove stone lintel dated 1671, 3 arcaded

openings at ground, 4 square loft openings. Plainer detached

ranges to S and E.
