It appears that this man with a great name was a gambling barrister with hugh debts. He was originaly from Bristol his family making money from slavery among other things. He married a wealthy heiress the Anglo Indian Margaret Bruce. On the death of her uncle they inherited all his property around Falkland. They paid for the building of the Parish Church hence the statue.
