Description

c 1870, 92 foot clear span cast-iron bridge with segmental
arch ring cast in five sections. Lattice braced spandrels, 13
foot carriage-way carried on brackets, good decorative
cast-iron balustrade over span. Pylons at abutments: coursed
rubble with rock-faced quoins, rectangular ashlar panelled
and coped piers over, and at terminals of outward curving
parapets on approaches. South abutment has a segmental headed
pedestrian arch to accomodate the pleasure-walk on the south
side of Balthayock Den.

Statement of Interest

This bridge is part of the North-East Drive of Balthayock House (demolished c.2000), built in 1870 to the design of James MacLaren. Formerly a scheduled monument. Scheduled on 25/02/1980 and descheduled on 23/03/2016.
