Description

Circa 1800. Pair of unfluted Roman-doric columns (capital missing on one). Gatepiers of former tollbar.

Statement of Interest

Port Allen has been variously known as 'Miln of Errol', 'Port of Errol', 'Errol Pow' and 'Harbour of Errol'. These piers formerly linked a 'tollbar' chain with the tollhouse immediately to the W, with an Inn (now Port Allen Farmhouse) beyond. Some 200 people lived at Port Allen during the earlier years of the 18th century, the hamlet also boasting its own meal mill with a charter granted in 1662. The OSA notes that all the grain grown in Perth was shipped from this port.
