James MacLaren, 1886, incorporating earlier fabric. Single storey and attic, and 2-storey sawmill. Rubble built and slated with tile-hung gablets.
Originally a grain mill, this building was remodelled by MacLaren in 1886, and drawings are held in the RIBA Drawings Collection. Calder notes that "The building's design owes a debt to Shaw's tile hung gables and Nesfield's roofscape to Regents Park Lodge of 1864". The separately listed farmhouse and steading, together with the sawmill are the earliest known works by MacLaren in Fortingall. They remind Calder of "the indigenous buildings of the Weald of southern England" with their "red tile-hanging ... providing an attractive contrast with the slate roof and rubble stone walls. The casements with leaded lights and patterned tile-hanging above the windows to the gables" (pages 71-2).
