James MacLaren, 1886. Single storey and attic and 2-storey, L-plan farmhouse and single storey steading with lofts. Rubble and slate with tile-hung gables and half-timber features.
The earliest of MacLaren's known work in Fortingall, this fine farmhouse and steading, together with the separately listed sawmill remind Calder of 'the indigenous buildings of the Weald of southern England' with their "red tile-hanging ... providing an attractive contrast with the slate roof and rubble stone walls.... and patterned tile-hanging above the windows to the gables" (pages 71-2). Drawings of Balnald are held in the RIBA Drawings Collection, and Calder notes that "The building's design owes a debt to Shaw's tile hung gables and Nesfield's roofscape to Regents Park Lodge of 1964" (page 72).
