Description

Early 19th century. Single storey with raised basement on falling ground to rear, 3-bay classical lodge with bowed ends. Polished ashlar with finely tooled margins and base course to E, N and S over rubble foundations; random rubble to W.

E (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: projecting pedimented bay to centre with recessed panel and deep-set modern timber door; windows in flanking bays.

W ELEVATION: partial basement in fall of ground. Bay to left of centre at basement with door and window, principal floor with small window to centre.

S AND N ELEVATIONS: single window to centre of bowed elevation.

8-pane glazing pattern in modern top-opening timber windows. Grey slates. Coped ashlar ridge stack with can.

Statement of Interest

May have been former tollhouse but more likely, as Gifford suggests, this was the East Lodge for nearby Balmuto Tower (listed separately).
