Description

Earlier 19th century. Gabled single storey and basement L-plan lodge

on ground falling to rear. Squared and snecked stugged cream ashlar sandstone with polished dressings. Moulded and chamfered arrises. Base course.

S (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: 3-bay; broader advanced gabled left bay; canted window with panelled pedestal; door in adjoining gabled porch at centre with roll-moulded lugged frame incorporating blind panel above.

Set-back blank bay to right.

E ELEVATION: 2-bay; narrow window to set-back left bay; gabled right bay with tripartite window and blind arrowslit in gablehead.

W ELEVATION: tripartite window at centre with gabled dormerhead containing blind panel. Moulded base course above single basement window.

N (REAR) ELEVATION: 2-bay. Basement window to left; gabled bay to right with window at ground, blind arrowslit above and modern harled and gabled projecting addition at basement.

Timber tilt and swing plate glass windows. Grey slates; saw tooth ashlar coped skews; corbel skewputts and finials; coped ashlar stack at centre. Rubble wall to SE with ashlar coping and terminating pier.

2 timber gatepiers and ironwork survive (half of set) with pedestrian gate and fencing adjoining wall.

Statement of Interest

B Group with Jedfoot Cottage (see separate listing). These cottages stand at the former E entrance to Monteviot house and their walls are joined as one. The road used to pass immediately by them. The gates are a standard Lothian estate pattern.
