Description

1856. Symmetrical terrace of 8, single storey and single storey and attic, Picturesque cottages. Coursed red rubble sandstone, ashlar dressings, slate roofs. Base course; doors originally boarded, now mostly modern out-of-character replacements, chamfered jambs to doors and windows, consoled slab canopies to doors and ground floor windows at nos 1, 2, 7 and 8; single and bipartite, 2-pane timber sash and case windows, leaded lattice lights to attic at nos 1, 2 and 7, out-of-character modern replacements at no 8; deep bracketted eaves with plain bargeboards and corbels at gables, exposed trusses at gables; tall, single and paired, corniced octagonal ridge stacks.

FRONT ELEVATION: single storey block to centre; 2 slightly advanced gabled entrances to centre, window to left and right, further gabled entrance to far left and right with window to outer left and right. Single storey and attic block to left; gable advanced to right with door and window at ground floor, window at attic, bay recessed to left with window and gabled dormer breaking through eaves, door to left return gable; similar block to right in mirror image, but with gabled porch to right return.

INTERIOR: not seen.

Statement of Interest

Alma Terrace was part of a building scheme initiated by the 11th Duke

of Hamilton which included Douglas Row and Brodick Primary School. The terrace, with its gables and stacks, forms an important skyline feature when viewed from the shore.
