Claggan School in what was then Argyll

Claggan School. The gable to the left was the school with the bell tower above it, the rear to the right was the schoolhouse. My mother was the teacher for a while in the early 1960's when this photo was taken by my father. The school took all the primary school pupils from Ardtornish Estate and the surrounding area plus the secondary pupils who were doing correspondence courses as opposed to going to Oban for the high school as was the normal in these days. The school also functioned as a church on certain Sundays of the month. The secondary school pupils (3) sat in one side of the area of the school and the primary (approx 16) on the other. I remember there was a functioning bell in the tower rung by a rope in the school room. In the early sixties there was no electricity and the lighting in the school and schoolhouse was by calor gas as was the cooker, water was/is provided from a local stream/burn in the hills behind the school. A very solid building.
