Possibly Richard Crichton, early 19th century. 2-storey
L-plan house with single storey additions. Coursed sandstone.
ENTRANCE ELEVATION: 3-bay. Square porch at centre with
cornice and blocking course, front window, and pilastered
doorpiece on right return, panelled door; windows in flanking
bays and to each bay at 1st floor.
REAR ELEVATION: blank gable to advanced wing at left, lean-to outbuildings.
SIDE ELEVATION: 2 widely grouped bays to each side with
windows at each floor. Single storey arm extending to left
of main front, piend-roofed with door flanked by windows.
12-pane glazing pattern predominating in sash and case
windows. Wallhead and gable end ashlar stacks. Grey slates.
RETAINING WALLS AND PIERS: rubble retaining walls enclosing
garden to main front and adjoining 2 square, pyramid capped,
ashlar gatepiers at the rear service court.
Richard Crichton built Dunglass House and stables in similar
materials in 1807, and the simple classical form of the
gardener's house suggests it was also designed by him. The
Old Gardener's House and Walled Garden to SW are listed
separately.
