Description

Richard Crichton, circa 1807. Quadrangular stable court in
severe classical style, converted for domestic use. Roughly
coursed sandstone with droved ashlar dressings and base
course.
SW RANGE: 9-bay, single storey with attic. 3 slightly
advanced bays at centre under open pedimented gable breaking
eaves; semi-circular archway at centre, with upper part
blocked and bipartite inserted, leaving high pend below.
Windows flanking at ground, with small bipartites above.
Segmentally arched 1st floor bipartite to centres of 3 outer
bays, each just breaking eaves in gabled dormerhead.
NE RANGE: 8-bay, single storey with attic. 6-bay projection
at centre, rounded at angles; 2 segmental windows to centre
bays, flanked by segmental, tripartite doorways; doorway to
outer left advanced bay, blank at opposite end. Windows to
outer bays of main range.
NW RANGE: 4 single storey bays of centre block, with
segmentally arched doorway off-centre to left flanked by
segmental windows, and with later window inserted at outer
right. Taller outer gabled bays formed by gabled ends of
front and rear ranges, each with recessed full-height
semi-circular arched panel, detailed in upper part as on
entrance elevation, with stone mullioned bipartite below to
outer right and single light to outer left window.
SE RANGE: doorway in single storey central block, off-centre
to right, flanked by segmental windows; blocked window to
left and further segmental window to outer left of single
storey range. Gabled outer bays detailed as NW range, with
bipartites at ground to both bays.
COURTYARD: some flagstones retained. Centre bays of front
range detailed as exterior, with ground floor window to left
blocked; flanked to left by hayloft door breaking eaves in
gabled dormerhead; hayloft to right, detailed as above. 5
segmental carriage openings to NE range at left with
pedimented doorway at centre and 2 further carriageways to
right. Single storey ranges with irregular openings, 5
windows to SE and 4 with doorway to NW.
Small-pane glazing pattern to sash and case windows and
casements in bipartites. Ashlar coped skews; grey slates.
Ashlar ridge stacks, some truncated.

Statement of Interest

Principal features retained on conversion. Laundry Cottage

and probably the gatepiers, listed separately, were also by

Richard Crichton.
