The graves of Thomas Brown, James Wood, Andrew Sword, John Weddell and John Clyde who were captured at the Battle of Bothwell Bridge in 1680. For refusing to divulge information that would help identify the assassins of Archbishop Sharp of St. Andrews, their bodies were brought here to be hung in chains near to the spot where Covenanters had murdered Sharp on 3rd May, 1679. The Covenanters regarded Sharp as a 'Judas' for abandoning his prebyterianism and accepting his appointment by Charles II to the archbishopric. He was reviled for his zealous imposition of episcopacy and in particular his judicial treatment of prisoners after the Pentland Rising of 1666. He condemned to death eleven men who had surrendered on a promise of mercy, telling them “You were pardoned as soldiers, but you are not acquitted as subjects.“
