Description

Circa 1920. Tapered classical granite square-plan cenotaph
on 2-step base.

Statement of Interest

The village square was laid out on the axis of the church by

Sir Archibald Grant in 1716 the centre of the square forming a

cattle pound for Banffshire drovers. The original houses were

clay-bound stone thatched with heather. The N.S.A. v XII p.468

describes it as almost entirely rebuilt of late by the

proprietor. It was gradually Tudorised by Sir Arthur Grant

between 1889 and 1902
