Description

Early 19th century, A Stewart Tod alterations to rear circa 1940. Terraced row of 4 uniform 2-storey, 3-bay houses. Harled with painted margins.

NW (MAIN STREET) ELEVATION:

NOS 22 TO 32: centre bay of each with panelled timber door (that to Nos 30 and 32 with fanlight) and small adjacent window to right, window in bay to right and bipartite window to left; regular fenestration to 1st floor.

NOS 34 AND 36: panelled timber door to centre of each and windows in flanking bays, regular fenestration to 1st floor.

SE (SHORE) ELEVATION:

NOS 22 TO 32: centre bay of each with later dramatic curving forestair to 1st floor entrance and segmental-headed understair door.

NOS 34 AND 36: forestair removed exposing rubble at centre bay.

All windows blinded temporarily for protection. Pantiles. Coped harled stacks with some cans and ashlar-coped skews. Cast-iron downpipes and decorative rainwater hoppers to Nos 22-28.

Statement of Interest

Property of Wemyss Properties Ltd. No 22 adjoins West Wemyss Tolbooth (listed separately). At the time of resurvey (1998), Wemyss Properties and Fife Historic Buildings Trust plan to restore this fine traditional streetscape. Continuation of similarly detailed 2-20 Main Street (see separate listing).
