Cargen House Pavilion

Uploader's Comments

This picture taken in June 2004, shows the pavilion situated at the corner of the former walled garden which at one time formed part of the Cargen Estate. Cargen House was built of Dumfriesshire sandstone in the 1870s by the family of Patrick Dudgeon. It remained the family home until it was requisitioned during the second world war to keep German prisoners of war. After the war it was taken over by the Youth Hostel Association, but by 1955 it fell into disrepair with the discovery of dry rot and it was decided that in order to avoid paying local rates, the roof would be removed. It quickly became a ruin and now that the site has been cleared, there is now no trace of the main building and all that survives is the pavilion and the lodge on the Dumfries-New Abbey Road
