1837 Classical house built in front of 1631 house, thus
doubling its thickness. All 2 storeys, on raised basement.
1837 HOUSE: polished red ashlar (basement droved); 5-bay
south front, inner 3 bays advanced and pedimented, with
narrow basement lights, inner canted window at ground (rising
from basement); other windows 12-pane sashes, architraved
above basement, with aprons and cill bands, and cornices at
ground floor. Principal entrance on short east wall, steps to
pedimented doorpiece. Angle margins. Cornice; symmetrically
placed stacks; piended roof. 1631 HOUSE: (much rebuilt:
rubble-built with ashlar dressings; openings mostly altered
and arranged irregularly, some below relieving arches, some
margined, some with moulded or chamfered reveals;
round-headed stair window, door and wide former
segmental-arched opening (now a window) on north wall; mostly
12-pane sashes; south west angle corbelled at 1st floor where
1837 house adjoins. End and axial stacks; roofs slated.
Design of 1837 house comparable with that of Riddingwood
house in Kirkmahoe parish by Walter Newall.
