Sir Robert Smirke, circa 1820. Greek classical, L-plan,
single storey gate lodge. Cullalo ashlar, with cill course,
entablature and moulded cornice. Pedimented 3-bay
temple-like frontages to each arm, with tall windows in
each bay, and on return bay of N-S arm. Porch set in
angle with unfluted Doric column to SW angle and pier to
SE; vertically paned, fanlit door; doorway balanced at
right angles by deep, blind opening. Blocking course
above porch. Low red sandstone outbuilding adjoined at
N. 12-pane glazing pattern to sash and case windows.
Grey-slates. Coped grouped stacks to N-S ridge.
QUADRANT WALLS AND GATEPIERS: ashlar quadrants with
moulded coping and base course; square piers at intervals
and larger gatepiers, with moulded coping. Heavy chain
strung between piers; simple wrought-iron gates.

Statement of Interest

Partner to East Lodge, listed separately, forming pair,

executed in similar stone and Greek style, yet revealingly

different designs.
