Description

Earlier 18th century, kennels late 19th century, Single storey, rectangular-plan stable. Harl pointed rubble masonry, irregular pink sandstone quoins, stone slate roof. Flat-coped skews with moulded skew ends.

W GABLE: door at right, off-centre window at left with 6-pane glazing at top, boarded at bottom, arrow slit ventilator at gable.

S ELEVATION: dilapidated window at centre.

E GABLE: forms SW corner of Balmuir House garden wall; dilapidated window at left.

INTERIOR: stalls removed; boarded walls and coomb ceiling.

LOUPIN-ON-STANE AND GATEPIERS: situated at SW angle aligned with W gable; large stugged and squared rubble blocks forming 5 steps; 2 segmental-headed monolithic gatepiersm, 1 attached to loupin-on-stane.

KENNELS: adjoining N elevation of stable; 3 brick built lean-to kennels; plain cast-iron enclosing railings on low rubble wall; ruinous rubble built enclosure at left.

Statement of Interest

See NOTES to Balmuir House. The stable is probably contemporary with the original part of Balmuir House. The moulded skew ends are similar to those at the dovecotl listed spearately. Included in B Group with Balmuir House, dovecot, Garage Cottage, coach house/stables and walled kitchen garden.
