Description

Earlier 19th century in appearance, and probably built as prt of pyroligneous acid works alongside. Now (1989) 2 houses, though it may have been a tenement originally. Symmetrical large 3-storeyed gabled block with big end stacks, 4 bays, the inner 2 paired and with lean-to double porch at ground; rubble, ashlar cills and lintels, harled flanks, slate roof. Sash windows, mostly 12-pane glazing pattern, top floor bipartites (probably an alteration) with timber mullions and plate glass sashes. Rear elevation is also symmetrical, paired inner doors approached by steps.

Statement of Interest

There is a tradition that the buildings formed part of the canal works, and so dates from the early 19th century. Another tradition links Telford's name to the building, but there is no evidence of this in the NMRS.
