Description

Circa 1880, incorporating earlier 19th century fabric. 2-storey, 3-bay, rectangular-plan, gabled Jacobethan detailed inn. Strapwork detailing to gableheads. Harled squared and snecked sandstone rubble. Base course, eaves course cornice. Plain margins, projecting cills and lintels to windows.

N (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: door to centre, blind oculus above, corbelled cornice. Flanked by symmetrical, slightly advanced gabled bays, broad windows to ground floor, stone mullioned bipartite windows to upper floor, breaking eaves with strapwork decoration to gableheads above lintels. Gablet finials to apex of gables, finial to left gable terminating in stone star. Door to far right.

S (REAR) ELEVATION: irregular fenestration to rear.

E (SIDE) ELEVATION: blind gable end.

W (SIDE) ELEVATION: blind gable end.

Plate glass sash and case windows to upper storey, modern plate glass to ground. Grey slates, lead flashing. Broad, coped gable stacks.

INTERIOR: modern pub fittings.

Statement of Interest

Previously known as the Lodge Bar or the Masons Lodge. The facade was added to the earlier fabric of Airdrie's first Masonic Lodge, founded in 1809. Strapwork similar to Moray House, Edinburgh, Thomas Shepherd.
