Description

Dated 1656, with later alterations. Square-plan gateway. Sandstone rubble. Elliptical pend arch to E gable elevation; roll-moulded elliptical pend arch to screen wall elevation (Kirk Port). Stone and timber seating and mort-safes to interior walls; braced timber ceiling. 2-leaf spear-headed iron gates to entrance from Kirk Port. Grey slate roof.

Statement of Interest

Marks entrance from Kirk Port to the Auld Kirk of Ayr and its graveyard including boundary walls and lamp standard (see separate list descriptions). Under the protection of the gateway, the mort-safe was rested while the first part of a burial service was read (now hung on interior walls).
