Andrew MacLachlan, 1867. 2-storey and basement, 3-bay Italianate villa with single storey and basement wing to right. Ashlar entrance elevation; rubble to sides; channelled pilaster quoins. Round-arched windows to main entrance elevation block; aprons to those at ground floor; keyblocks to those at 1st floor; balustraded parapet (central bay) and balconies (outer bays) at 1st floor.
SE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: central stepped platt oversailing basement; modern canopy over; 2-leaf entrance door, flanking sidelights; tripartite window at 1st floor. Advanced flanking bays; blind at basement to outer left, 2 narrow windows and 2-leaf glazed door with letterbox fanlight to right; tripartite windows at ground and 1st floor to both bays (additional narrow window to right at ground floor). 2 single openings at ground floor to wing to right (openings at basement obscured by foliage); 2 single windows at basement and ground floor to recessed section to adjoining section; timber door with letterbox fanlight to outer right.
SW (SIDE) ELEVATION: 3-bay, with modern addition to outer left. Advanced central modern flat-roofed entrance at exposed basement; single window to right (modern garage to outer right); regular round-arched fenestration at ground and 1st floors. Shallow rectangular-plan advanced bay to left, ends at ground floor; single window at basement, tripartite windows at ground and 1st floor. Modern additions to outer left.
NW ELEVATION: asymmetrical; 4-bay; basement and part of ground floor obscured by modern addition; canted window through ground and 1st floors; round arched windows to ground and 1st floors of remaining bays. Additions adjoining to outer left.
NE ELEVATION: ground floor obscured by wing and additions; round-arched window off-centre to right of 1st floor.
Plate glass timber sash and case windows. Platformed slate roof; central corniced stacks; circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.
INTERIOR: not seen 1999.
BOUNDARY WALL: low coped rubble boundary wall enclosing site.
Marked on the Ordnance Survey map, 1896 as Gartferry, the building was originally the home of Robert Paton, and converted to a hotel in 1930 by Fairbairns of Glasgow. Extensive modern additions to rear.
