Statement of Interest

Forming an integral and important part of the historic streetscape in Banff, this building is also notable for its former use as a cinema with an auditorium surviving to the rear. Entered at ground floor, the former 'Picture House' opened in 1937. 'Back of Court' cinemas (a particularly Scottish form of cinema design) were predominantly associated with early urban cinemas and this Aberdeenshire example is a less common variant of the type

See the Cinema Theatre Association website for further information about the cinema use.

Description updated as part of the Cinemas Thematic Study 2007-08.
