James MacLaren, circa 1870. Sizable free neo-Jacobean
mansion, 2-storey and attic, coursed rubble with
semi-symmetrical ashlar west front, 3 bays, outer bays
advanced and gabled with corbelled octagonal chimney shafts,
left-hand bay has shallow ground floor tripartite,
broken-segmental pediment first floor bipartite, arched attic
window with keyblock; right-hand gable canted bay through
both floors, parapet raised in gablet with finial;
recessed centre bay contains ground floor porch projecting
slightly forward of flanking gabled bays, tripartite
treatment, stilted entablature on anta pilasters, pierced
parapet, single window with dormer head above N and S
elevations 3-bay, centre bays slightly advanced and gabled,
centre bay at N front has ground floor tripartite and 1st
floor bipartite with strapwork head, S elevation partly
overlaid by conservatory, centre 1st hood-moulded tripartite, cantilevered stone balcony with iron rail. Slated roof with
straight skews, stop-chamfered gable stacks with moulded
copes. Single-storey offices with louvred ventilators on E of
walled, court to rear, Garden wall with polygonal gatepiers.
Lodge simple and spoiled by modern porch.
