Statement of Interest

This is a well-detailed high quality bronze statue of a local public figure by the Edinburgh sculptor, Charles McBride. Now in Kinloch Public Park, situated close to the road and public swimming baths, it adds significantly to the streetscape of this main thoroughfare in Campbeltown.

The plinth is inscribed 'William Mackinnon, Bt, C.I.E of Loup and Strathaird, Scotland'.through whose agency British East Africa was secured to Great Britain. Born in Campbeltown, 31st March 1823, died at London, 22nd June 1893'. William McKinnon was president of the Imperial British East India Company, one of whose objectives was the elimination of the slave trade.

The statue was previously sited in Dumbarton, at the former Keil School, which McKinnon founded. This school was originally in Campbeltown and moved to Dumbarton around 1925, together with the statue. The school in Dumbarton subsequently closed and the statue was relocated to its present site in 2003.

Charles McBride (1953-1903) was an Edinburgh sculptor, who was recognized especially for his portrait marble busts, some of which remain in the Edinburgh City Collection.

Previously listed on 31-Jan-84 as HBNUM 24899 in Dumbarton Burgh as part of West Dunbartonshire Council Statutory list.
