James Gillespie & Robert Scott, architects. Foundation stone
for County Buildings and jail laid 19.7.1824. Jail demolished
1973, leaving only gateway, and some stone fragments built
into nearby rubble walls. Gateway built of polished ashlar,
is in original position; iron-studded oak door recessed in
round-headed opening; banded at impost level, moulded arch
above, frieze and cornice with Dumbarton Burgh arms above in
parapet. 2 pairs of reset windows and strapwork decoration.
Used as a prison until 1883, and then as a County Council
store until becoming derelict when new County Buildings were
opened in 1965.
James Gillespie married a Graham heiress and subsequently
changed his name to James Gillespie Graham, by which name he
is better known.
