Description

Circa 1453; removed and re-erected in College St, 1850; moved
to present site 1907. Single pointed arch springing from
supporting columns, sole remaining identified fragment of St
Mary's Collegiate Church. Ashlar; outer faces of supporting
columns faced in polished ashlar, probably in 1907.

Statement of Interest

Although some references give 1858 as the date of removal,

the Dumbarton Herald of 20.7.1854 confirms 1850 as the date

of removal. The railway station was to occupy the site. The

arch formed a gateway first to the Old Burgh Academy, and

then to St Augustine's, until 1907.
