Description

Guthrie Mausoleum: late 18th century ashlar cube with keystoned recessed arch to each face flanked by twin Ionic angle pilasters. W arch formerly open, probably with wrought-iron gate and tympanum, now blocked and cement-rendered. Cornice, blocking course and dome, stepped at base. Details somewhat eroded.

Rubble-walled enclosure with square gatepiers, modern gates.

Statement of Interest

Site of Rood Chapel, appropriated as cemetery for victims of pestilence 1561 and later for strangers and seafarers. Most monuments are circa 1820-60 and modest. The Guthries were the principle land-owners E of Dundee.
