Description

Mid 19th century. 4-storey, attic and basement, 3-bay commercial building. Stugged sandstone coursers, rubble to rear, slate roof. Lintel band to ground floor, wallhead course, central nepus gable with corniced stack, ashlar-coped skews; paired and bipartite margined windows, 2-pane timber sash and case glazing.

FRONT ELEVATION: paired doors to centre (door to left blocked as window) with consoled corniced lintels, bipartite window to left and right with basement windows below, paired windows flanked by bipartites to 1st-3rd floors, single window to gable.

REAR ELEVATION: various basement windows, door and window to ground floor centre flanked by bipartite to left and right, stair window to centre at each floor terminating in piend-roofed gable breaking through eaves, 2 single windows to left and right at each floor.

INTERIOR: not seen, but derelict wash-house extant in attic.

Statement of Interest

Lamb notes that the above agreement was 'the first proposal for the making of the lower part of Commercial Street, and it was partially completed in 1834'. This building and those at Nos 17, 19 and 21, and 23 are likely to date from the mid 19th century.
