Description

B Thomson and Sons (Engineers, Leith) 1875. Former brewery.

5-storey shallow concave frontage, coursed squared rubble with channelled pilaster strips at string courses main brewhouse originally s ymmetrical 3-bay, outer bays with bipartite window: 1st floor windows pilastered, 2nd floor windows supported by scrolls, 3rd floor corniced only, 4th floor incised carving to cills; lintels integrated into main entablature. Ground floor altered circa 1950. Left hand bay originally 2-storey only with 2 arched windows each level, later raised to full height with tripartite windows to upper floors in similar style. Ground floor modern.

Slate roof. Windows sash and case, 2-pane glazing pattern. Ornate wrought iron grilles to 1st floor round-head brewery windows. Public house interior relatively modern. Lower 2 floors are of fireproof construction.

Statement of Interest

Built for Mrs Margaret Wills, brewer, formerly of the nearby Dudhope Brewery, ground floor bottling, 1st floor tun room, wort copper at 2nd and 3rd. Converted to commercial/residential circa 1914.
